Round of applause for the squad. Despite the chaos the pandemic caused, we came together and formed an incredible community. As we always say here at the Sussex Squad Podcast, while we were all brought together by Harry and Meghan, our mission here is bigger than Harry and Meghan.
Pushing back against the negative narrative created about The Sussexes – particularly Meghan – is also part of sticking up for what’s right and sticking up for ourselves. It should never be okay to assassinate the character of a woman of colour, and it should never be okay to brutally bully a woman of colour in the way the British press have. If it’s okay to bully her, then it’s okay to bully the average person on the street. That’s what they were trying to normalise and we will not allow it.
We will push on and continue to fight back against the narrative in 2021, but for now, let’s take a look back at a few of the things we accomplished in 2020.
The 12 Hour Squadathon
WE! DID! THAT!
We showed up and showed out.
After critics made fun of our 3-4 hour weekly podcasts, we came up with the idea of doing a 12 hour podcast. Take that haters! The original aim was to raise $1000 for Invictus Games, we raised an incredible $24,707.
They say you can judge a person by the company you keep, I think you can also judge a public figure by the actions of their fans. Meghan and Harry have inspired kindness, compassion and generosity in their fanbase and time after time they come out and support.
Tiny Tickers Fundraiser
After Meghan publicly disclosed details about her miscarriage, thousands of women worldwide began to openly talk about their own experiences losing a child. Her thoughtful essay sparked a global conversation, and, once again, within the Sussex Squad community, the motivation to give back. Sussex Squad Cooking Club launched a fundraiser for Tiny Tickers a UK based charity that helps young babies with heart problems. They have raised over £4000 so far.
Sussex Squad Fansites Go From Strength to Strength
In the sea of hate, it can be incredibly difficult to find pro-Meghan, pro-Sussex fansites, social media handles and Youtube channels. 2020 saw some new platforms appear and more established platforms reached new milestones. Sussex Set hit 10k subscribers on Youtube and Sussex Squad Podcast isn’t too far from 10k either!
Camfed Fundraiser
In honour of Harry and Meghan’s birthdays, The Sussex Squad (led by @feepeeper on Twitter) raised money for the African based charity Camfed. The charity provides education for young women. The Sussex Squad had already raised over $130,000+ , but Harry and Meghan were moved by our efforts and matched the donations bringing the total to well over $200,000. The hashtags #InspiredByMeghan and #InspiredByHarry were used to promote the fundraiser online.
Archies Birthday Aka – Archie Day
Several fundraisers and awareness campaigns were held in honour of Archies birthday. Children’s Aid NYC was able to perform 300 medical tests with the $15,000 that was raised. Nourish a non-profit organisation focused on conservation saw a boost to their donations, and £60,000 was raised for Wellchild. Sussex Squad fan @Mia_Squaddie on Twitter raised $1000 after selling homemade face masks!
We Kept The Momentum Going
We served the receipts, we hit back at the false headlines, and we countered the narrative created by the mainstream media against Meghan and Harry. We were so successful, that even certain Royal reporters who we won’t name couldn’t keep us off of their lips.
2021 will bring new challenges for all of us, but I am also confident that it will also bring more wins.
