Meghan Inspired New Year Hobbies

Are you ready for a New Year and a New You? Of course, you are! It’s always good to try and adopt one new hobby or learn one new skill each year to give you something fun to look forward to, develop yourself, and create a sense of purpose in your life. We created a list of things we know Meghan loves to give you some ideas on what you could do in 2021.

Learn About Wine
Meghan loves wine. Her former blog The Tig (short for Tignanello)
was named after an Italian wine, and you’ll find many pictures of her living her best life sipping on the finest champaigns. If you can’t tell your Rose from your Chardon, Oz Clarkes ‘Let Me Tell You About Wine’ is the perfect beginners guide, I can attest to this having read the book myself. Oz is one of the world’s most celebrated and colourful wine authorities ,and is book is filled with antidotes about various vines, where they’re grown, and how to match your food and drink. The wine world is often criticised for being stuffy and pompous, but Clarke makes the world of wine accessible, suggesting affordable wines that the average person can afford.

Take Up Calligraphy

Calligraphy as a form of writing that spans various countries, cultures and time periods. From East to West, The Ancient Mayans to Buddhist Sanskrit, it is not just a way of writing, but an old age form of art. Did you know Meghan can write in the style of calligraphy? Her perfectionism extends to her magnificent handwriting. Meghan is known for writing hand-written letters to friends, family and associates, and it’s truly a wonderful touch in a time when we mostly short text with emojis.

Meghan’s calligraphy is not just a personal talent, but something she turned into a side hustle. Completely unaware of who she would become a few years down the road, Paula Patton, former wife of Robin Thicke, hired Meghan to do her wedding invitations! In an interview with Town and Country Paula said if the encounter: “I just thought Meghan did a beautiful job,” Patton tells Town & Country of her custom invitations and save-the-dates done by Markle. “It really is a lost art, and it was so nice to create something without a device that doesn’t use a battery or need to be plugged in.”

Just how did Meghan learn calligraphy though? She previously spoke about it in an interview with Esquire , where she said that she learned the craft as a young girl: “I went to an all-girls Catholic school for like six years during the time when kids actually had handwriting class. I’ve always had a propensity for getting the cursive down pretty well. What it evolved into was my pseudo-waitressing job when I was auditioning. I didn’t wait tables. I did calligraphy.” Not a bad side-hustle we say.

You can look up beginner tutorials online, and we recommend the book Lettering and Modern Calligraphy: A Beginner’s Guide: Learn Hand Lettering and Brush Lettering By Paper Peony Press if you want an easy to follow beginners guide.

Try Yoga
Like many Cali girls, Meghan Loves yoga. Not only does yoga help you stay in shape physically, it also helps to keep your mind and mental health in balance also. Thanks to the internet, there are many free online tutorials that you can watch on sites like YouTube. Still though, we recommend joining a yoga club if its’ something that’s accessible to you , not only for the community, but for extra support while doing your workout. Many people end up with injuries while doing yoga, because they don’t hold poses properly, something you can’t get help with without a teacher watching. Consider a live online class as and affordable middle ground also.

‘Get in shape’ is a common new years resolution, but many people end up giving up the gym after a few weeks. Instead of pumping iron and lifting weights, why not try something completely different. You’re more likely to stick to something if you enjoy it, rather than doing it because you feel you have too, then it ends up feeling like a chore.

Learn Some New Recipes
Our friends over at Sussex Squad Cooking Club have plenty of recipes for you to choose from, but there are a plethora of free recipes online and videos for you to follow all over the web. You can also support a good cause by purchasing the The Hub Together cookbook that Meghan wrote a foreword for. All profits from the sales of this book will help the Hubb Community Kitchen to strengthen lives and communities through cooking. Once you learn how to get recipes right, cooking becomes less of a chore and more of a pleasure. Find new recipes that tickle your taste-buds, make use of new spices and ingredients you’ve never used before, and explore worldly cuisines you probably only enjoy when you go out to restaurants. Why pay a restaurants fee when you could learn to cook delicious food at home.

Redecorate Your House
We can’t imagine Meghan and Harry will be inviting Martha Stewart for a house tour of their California estate anytime soon, but we’re sure they’re making their house into a beautiful home and can decided as and when (if ever) they want to show it to us. We do however, have an idea of Meghans impeccable decor style from pictures she posted herself when she had her own personal instagram. One of the keys to redecorating is not to pressure yourself to make toom many changes at once. Taking your time to re-decorate your home is not only more cost-effective as you can spread the cost over time, it forces you to curate every item, think carefully about every texture, tone and colour. During a video message that was aired on America’s Got Talent, Meghan’s fans spotted the book Wood And Iron: Industrial Interiors. Industrial interiors takes inspiration from raw, earthy materials such as concrete, exposed brick work and ageing metals. It is a growing trend that mixes dark colour, mismatched textures and unique lighting to create a look that’s modern yet still incredibly homely.

We hope that inspired you in some way, what do you planning on doing this year?
